Why Gratitude and Appreciation Should be Part of Your Personal Brand

There are many attributes that successful businessmen and women possess. Ambition. Communication skills. Vision. The list goes on. Today I’d like to suggest another important quality… gratitude. The ability to express gratitude and appreciation goes a long way towards building an appealing personal brand.

Quite simply, because people like to feel appreciated. Whether it is your employees, your customers, your partners, or your family members – when you make others feel appreciated, they’ll reward you with loyalty. So how can you build gratitude and appreciation into your personal brand? Below are three practical suggestions.

1) Send cards – and not just during the holiday season. Taking the time to send tangible, handwritten cards (as opposed to emails or e-cards) is a great way to express appreciation. In today’s digital age, handwritten notes and cards stand out. But don’t limit your card-sending to the holiday season – make it a point to send out thank-you cards and notes during the rest of the year, as well.

2) Get personal – pick up the phone and call. When is the last time somebody outside of your family has personally called you to thank you for something? I’m willing to bet that it’s been a while. These days, we just don’t take the time to pick up the “old fashioned” telephone and make a call. The next time you sign a big contract or receive a key referral, make a point to call the individuals responsible and express your appreciation.

3) Look for opportunities to pay it back – and pay it forward. Finally, look for opportunities to return the favor whenever you can. Send business to individuals that send you business. Look out for the best interests of your friends and advisors. And look for opportunities to “pay it forward” – to help others out, while asking for nothing in return. These small investments into your community can pay big dividends down the road.

People like to feel appreciated – it’s that simple. So make sure that the important people in your life, personally and professionally, know how much you appreciate them!
