Personal Branding: Show Appreciation… and Build Your Business

We have talked about a wide variety of strategies to help you grow your business on this blog. Today, we are going to address one such strategy that may sound strange at first … how to grow your business by expressing appreciation. I know what you’re thinking—you’re here for business advice, not Etiquette 101. But showing appreciation and expressing gratitude is more than just good manners.

You see, we all crave appreciation. We want to be recognized. It’s simply human nature. So expressing appreciation isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s also a key way to keep your customers (and others) coming back for more. Below are four specific ways to apply this strategy:

1) Show appreciation for your customers. Do your customers know that you appreciate them… really? Or do they not get much more than a quick “thanks!” Making your customers feel valued is vitally important. There are plenty of ways to do this… for instance, throw an annual event, send each customer a gift on their birthday, or write a personalized note from time to time. Get creative!

2) Show appreciation for referral sources. Do you have friends, family members, or colleagues that refer you business from time to time? If so, make sure they know you’re grateful. Not only will they appreciate the recognition, but they’ll be more likely to send more business your way. A phone call, a handwritten note, or even a gift card to a local restaurant are great ways to express your gratitude.

3) Show appreciation to your employees. You issue your employees a paycheck… what more do they need? Actually, showing appreciation for their work is a critical way to keep them happy, motivated, and fulfilled. A simple “great job today” or “thanks for your hard work!” can be very effective. Make sure your employees know that you appreciate their work!

4) Show appreciation to your community. Finally, look for ways to give back to the community that supports your business. Participate in local events. Support your local schools. Find a cause or a movement to support. It’s the right thing to do, it increases the visibility of your business, and it signals to your neighbors that you really do appreciate their support.

Believe it or not, showing your appreciation can be a powerful marketing strategy. Contact me today if you’d like to learn more!
